Mississippi State Fires Head Football Coach Zach Arnett

Mississippi State Has Fired Head Football Coach Zach Arnett

Arnett Was In His First Full Season As Coach

Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after less than one season. The move comes two days after the Bulldogs suffered a 51-10 defeat to Texas A&M that dropped their record to 4-6. Arnett was in his first full season as coach, having taken over the program after the tragic passing of Mike Leach from complications of a heart condition in December 2022.

Arnett compiled a 4-6 record, including a 1-6 mark in Southeastern Conference play this season. The Bulldogs' only SEC win came against South Carolina on Oct. 22.

Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen said in a statement that the decision to fire Arnett was made after "a thorough evaluation of the program." Cohen said he believes the program needs "a change in leadership to achieve the goals we have set for Mississippi State football."

Arnett's firing comes as a surprise to some, as he was widely praised for his work in leading the Bulldogs through a difficult transition following Leach's death. However, the team's poor performance on the field this season has led to his dismissal.

Mississippi State will now begin a search for a new head coach. The Bulldogs are expected to hire a coach with experience at the Power Five level.
