Role and Responsibilities
The Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia is the Queen's representative in the province. The role is largely ceremonial, but also includes some constitutional responsibilities.
The Lieutenant Governor's main duties include:
- Assenting to bills passed by the Legislative Assembly
- Summoning and dissolving the legislature
- Reading the Speech from the Throne
- Appointing the Premier and other members of the Executive Council
Salary and Benefits
As of 2023, the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia receives an annual salary of $160,917.
In addition to their salary, the Lieutenant Governor also receives a number of benefits, including:
- A residence
- A car allowance
- Health and dental insurance
- A pension
Qualifications and Appointment
To be eligible for appointment as Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, a person must be:
- A Canadian citizen
- At least 18 years of age
- A resident of British Columbia
The Lieutenant Governor is appointed by the Governor General of Canada on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada.
Term of Office
The term of office for the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia is five years.
However, the Lieutenant Governor may be reappointed for additional terms.
